During more than 20 years as a family lawyer in Austin, Texas, I have represented hundreds of women who come to me in the worst hour of their lives. They felt frightened that they would not be able to support their families ... angry that commitments were broken and trust was destroyed ... guilty that they couldn't protect their children from sadness and injury. As their lawyer I did what I could inside the legal system. Too many times I found myself saying, "There's nothing more I can do for you. The law doesn't provide any other remedies."

I felt frustrated that I couldn't give women what they really needed - pain relief. We usher people into our offices for the first time when their relationship has fallen apart. When we send them out for the last time, we have gotten them through the crisissuperficially, but they are not necessarily any better offthan theywere when we first met. Emotionally, spiritually, and physically, they are often devastated and they are struggling to do whatever it takes to survive from one day to the next. Eventually, the struggle gives way to resignation that forms a hard outer shell to protect them from life's tragedies.

"I feel much more confident and I have more focus on what I need to do for me. I think I have shifted my focus from living in the past and the reason for the break-up of my marriage, to what I want to be now. I feel more in touch with my feelings--especially the positive feelings I hardly remembered I had."

"I felt like the center of the universe. I understood I was still hurting deep on the inside and that I must care for that hurt just as if it was on the outside. I loved the scenery, the rooms, the facility as a whole. There was quiet space, open space, fun space -- a little bit of everything. The service was exceptional, and the staff's attitude was great too!"

I want more for these wonderful women. Mere survival is not what life should be about. We are entitled to have joyful lives, healthy relationships and bright futures. In order to get what we deserve, we need an approach that teaches us how to reconnect with the part of us that gets lost in the struggle of uncoupling. We need tools to get us through the tough times and give us energy to move forward. We need to be taken care of in a safe place while we catch our breath and gather our inner resources.

In 1998, I turned my attention to creating a place where women can experience what it feels like to be who they are at their core and to discover all the possibilities for their lives. I pulled together a team of professionals who share my vision and my passion for healing the wounds that must be directly addressed if we are to achieve our fullest potential. We developed A Spa for the Soul as a retreat for renewing your commitment to yourself.

During the retreats, I have seen women arrive as a bundle of chaotic misery, unable to clearly articulate the source of their pain because it comes at them from all directions. I have seen women who are stoic when they arrive -- shut out to all feeling for fear that they will open themselves up to something that will hurt them

again. I have seen women who think they have it all together and they're there just to support a friend -- they don't need any help. At the end of the retreat, an unbelievable transformation has occurred in all of them. They have somehow softened and come back to life, fully able to embrace their future in all its mystery.

As the retreat evolved, it became clear that this program is not just for women who are going through divorces.  It’s for all women who want more -- more joy, more passion, more fulfillment from the life they are living.  And who doesn’t want those things?

Working with women through A Spa for the Soul has changed my life as well. During the retreats I completely abandon myself to the joy and fulfillment I receive from seeing others grow so dramatically and with such grace. Each of our guests gives me the opportunity to learn more about who I truly am and how I can best serve myself through serving others.
